KaskomのSwaminathan Vがタミルナド州の農民らと手がけている、在来種コットンのカルンガニコットン。CALICOでも、2020年からGaam no Otloの一環としてご紹介をして参りました。
他のコットンとの大きな違いは、その油分の多さ。最初はなかなか吸水しないのですが、使ううちに馴染む風合いや原種コットンならではの逞しき艶やかさに虜になる方も増えています。
コットン原産国インドでも、その96%がすでに遺伝子組換えをしたアメリカ由来のコットンに切り替わっていますが、Swaminathanは、失われてしまったタミルナドの原種コットンとその可能性を研究し、農民の方々を説得し、取り組み続けてきました。
根が６フィート（約180cm)もあるため、降雨・地下水のみで育てることができ、特別な灌漑の設備や、農薬や肥料などの投資を必要としないため、小規模な農家でも生産を始めることができます。
コリアンダーやカロンジなどと混作することで生産のリスクも分散できる上、年に約３回収穫できることも分かってきました。
最初は半信半疑だったという農民の方々も、副収入になる上、自らの土地に元々あったコットンの栽培に関われることに喜びを見出しています。
今後も続けていけるかは、その需要次第というところです。
お色目は、無漂白のキナリです。少し、黒っぽい粒（綿実やカス）が混じります。短繊維なので、ベンガルのモスリンカディのような繊細な細番手を織ることはできませんが、そのやや粗めのざっくりした織りも原種コットンの魅力のひとつです。シャツ生地やハンカチなど幅広い用途にお使いいただけます。

Kalungani fabric does not absorb water easily, but gradually people are attracted to its texture and how the fabric ages after using and its robust characteristic which is unique to pure cotton.
India, the country of cotton origin, 96% of it has already been replaced by genetically modified American-derived cotton. Swaminathan researched on the lost origin cotton of Tamil Nadu and see its potential to help farmers.
Kalungani Cotton roots are as long as 6 feet (approximately 180 cm), it can be grown using only rainfall and ground water. It does not require special irrigation equipment, pesticides, fertilizers, or other investments, so even small-scale farmers can start production. It has also been found that mixed cropping with coriander and kalonji can lower production risks, and can be harvested about three times a year. The farmers, who were skeptical at first, are finding joy in being able to grow the cotton that was native to their land, as well as earn extra income. Continuation very much dependent on the demand.
Kalungani Cotton is a medium weight fabric that has a smooth texture compared to Kala Cotton Yardage. It is soft and comfortable on skin. As the fabric is unbleached, the fabric has a beautiful muted beige and off-white shade with little blackish grains (cotton seeds and dregs) on the surface. Since it is a short fiber, it cannot be woven
with a delicate fine count like Bengal Muslin Khadi, but its slightly coarse weave is also one of the attractions of Kalungani Cotton. As it can be used for a wide range of purposes such as shirt fabrics and handkerchiefs.
